Focus on Hampstead people

What is your background?

I have a TESOL and Linguistics degree and a CELTA teaching qualification which enabled me to work and study in Sweden with young learners.  I have travelled to parts of Europe, India and extensively in the UK.  I’m from London myself and so pleased to be working in the city because I think I’m definitely married to the city. I love reading, exploring museums, playing chess, winning at scrabble and listening to heavy metal music!  My friends and family are very important to me so students get to know a lot about them in my classes.

How long have you worked at the Hampstead School of English?

I started working at the school in February 2009 and it has been an amazing experience. I’ve taught a varied level of General English classes and really enjoying teaching the FCE exam class and TOIEC.

Do you speak any languages apart from English?

I am a fluent speaker of Punjabi (a language from North India) and know basic Swedish.  I use Punjabi with my family and used Swedish a lot when I was in Sweden but without any practice I’ve lost my knowledge.  I would love to learn a few more languages but as I only want to stay in London I don’t think I’ll ever get round to it.

What is your typical day at the Hampstead School of English?

I teach in the mornings and afternoons and I'm regularly involved in the social programme, so you’ll find me doing the occasional pub night or taking students to a late night museum opening in London J I have fun speaking to students on the school patios even if it’s raining because I think that’s the most relaxed way to learn English – by just talking.

What are the favourite aspects of your work?

I love meeting new and international students every week and learning about their culture from them.  I also really enjoy the variety of teachers that work at the school because everyone has very different backgrounds themselves.

What makes London and the Hampstead School of English such a positive experience for your students?

London has a lot to offer in terms of sights and famous places to visit.  There is a lot to do during the day, evenings and at weekends to suit students’ timetables.  The location of the school is in a quiet location of North London but near enough to Central London.  Coming to London will be a culturally interesting experience with the excitement of a capital city.
